ABOUT

Cassandra “Sandy” Phillips has been a scenic artist since 2004 and a member of USA829 since 2017.  

Sandy has a dual degree in Scenic Painting and Studio Painting fro Chatham University in Pittsburgh.  She has worked as a scenic artist for many of the city's most prominent producing houses, including a 4 year stint at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre (2007 - 2010), as well as City Theatre, Quantum Theatre, University of Pittsburgh and worked as Charge scenic for Pittsburgh Musical Theatre.  

Sandy went on to enjoy a national career, painting for theaters such as The Santa Fe Opera, Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Hartford Stage Company and earning Scenic Charge Artist credits from theaters such as Shakespeare and Company, and Barrington Stage Company. 

In 2012, Sandy accepted a staff position at the Tony Award winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival and spent six years painting over 64 productions for their three performance spaces. In addition to her day job, Sandy had the opportunity to pursue her educational aspirations by teaching the Summer Technical Theatre Intensive and working with Ashland High School's award winning theatre program as both a Scenic Artist and Designer.  She also participated in many of OSF's various audience outreach programs and educational presentations including video interviews and was featured on the OSF website for her "Makin' a Scene" video blog.
She has been published in Stage Directions Magazine.

In addition to a love of theater, Sandy has an ongoing commitment to equity activism and work in the fields of diversity and inclusion.  She was a member of the inaugural cohort of the National ArtEquity Facilitator training in 2016, has served on the Diversity and Inclusion Planning Council at OSF, and is a member of the community-led Racial Equity Coalition and Rural Organizing Project. Sandy believes in the transformative power of story telling, and that all of our experiences are made richer by the sharing of as many perspectives as there are people. 

In 2017, Sandy moved to New York City and joined the Union, United Scenic Artists 829.  She has worked as the Charge Scenic Artist at Showman Fabricators for 2 years followed by 4 years working on television shows such as Manifest, The Undoing on HBO, The Wu Tang Clan, the last two of these years was spent as the Charge Scenic Artist for the hit NBC show New Amsterdam.  She has also had the opportunity to work on Broadway musicals, Moulin Rouge, Beetlejuice, Kiss me Kate, King Lear, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, A dolls House, New York, New York, and Once Upon a One More Timeas well as tours of The Lion King, Six, Hamiltonand award shows such as the Tony Awards.

Sandy has since been able to further pursue her passion for teaching by working with the USA829 apprenticeship program, assisting passing on Lester Polokov's doughnut theory, trompe loiel, wood grain cartouche panels, drapery, gold ornament, marble, and stained glass.  She continues to grow herself, in a commitment to ever perfecting her skills by attending seminars and classes.  She hopes to become and educator someday, and pass on this beautiful tradition of visual storytelling.
